How to Host a Good Wake

Scott County Cremation • June 6, 2022

Wakes are a common part of traditional funerals. They are a way for family and friends to come and see the family of the deceased before the actual funeral.

Funerals are usually seen as stand-alone events. When most people think of a funeral, they think of the church, hearing the priest and speakers talk about the deceased, the burial, and then it’s done. But a funeral is an entire process. And part of that process is a wake. Plenty of people have been to wakes. They usually happen a day or two before the actual funeral. If you are tasked with hosting a wake and need help with what to do, you can contact cremation services in Savage, MN for more information regarding wakes.

What Is a Wake? How Do They Work?

·    A wake is a gathering of family friends who were close to the deceased. This time is usually spent remembering the deceased as people come and pay their respects. In most cases, the wakes aren’t long. They last just enough time to make sure that people can get there. For most funerals, the wake can be a few days before the funeral or a few hours before the actual funeral. The family and the funeral home make that decision.

Do I Need to Have a Wake?

·  If you do not want to have a wake for whatever reason, you do not have to. A lot of people like to have a wake because it allows friends and family an opportunity to pay their respects. Also, not everyone may attend the funeral, so for some, this is a chance to come and visit the family.

What Do I Need at A Wake?

What you include at the wake is up to you and where you are planning to have the wake. If you plan on having the wake at the actual funeral home or church, everything will be provided for you. There won’t be much to do. But if you are planning to have a wake somewhere a little less formal, there are some things to take into consideration.

·    Refreshments – If you are hosting a wake at your home, you may want to consider having food and drinks available. You would be able to turn it into a time where people can unwind, relax, and share stories and memories about the deceased.

·    Location  – Where you host your wake is also important. If you plan on doing it away from the church or funeral home, you should decide if you want to have it at a restaurant or your own home. Restaurants can be tricky because of the number of people you expect to show up. Homes offer a type of warmth and comfort that will make everyone feel good. The choice is up to you.

Hosting a wake is a good and honorable thing to do. In some cases, they can be a way to quietly show your respects for the dead, and at other times they can celebrate with food and laughter as memories of the deceases are shared. The type of wake you choose to have is up to you. But if you need help, then cremation services in Savage, MN would love to help you
